The First Cut

It was perfect grass cutting weather this morning when we got back from doing the weekly shopping. It was not so sunny to make it too hot, not to windy to make it too cold and above all it's not rained for a couple of days.

Where Wax Works

Barbara had to get out of the house today. She's not been well for the last couple of days and was feeling cooped up. It poured with rain all day. We got soaked simply walking to the train station. After a short ride on the train and another on the tube we then stood for about half an hour in the queue for Madame Tussauds while the rain attempted to drown us. Because it was so wet it appears that most of the tourists visited Tussauds today to get inside.

Gone But Not Forgotten

I was 16 when I got my first motorbike. Back in 1987 we didn't have to do any test to ride the 50cc bike, my parents bought me the bike to use to get to college on and I got on it and went.

The first trip I made was from my parents house to Maidstone where my grandparents lived, the journey is about 25 miles each way. I had no idea how to use the clutch and stalled the bike at every set of lights. Since the bike didn't have an electric start I spent a lot of time kick starting it. I stayed tight into the curb and my father followed me in his van as a support vehicle.

End Of 2001

My parents bought me heated handle grips for the scooter, it took dad and I a couple of attempts to get them wired correctly. The instructions said to wire directly to the battery but we wanted the grips to shut off with the ignition key. Though the cable from the ignition was suffice for a power we had to wire the return direct to the battery rather than to the chassis.

Oh Deer

While I'm still learning to ride I'm not allowed to take the scooter on the motorway, this means I have to take the more scenic route to and from work. This is no understatement, riding through Epping Forest is very scenic.

Dream Bike

Before I could ride my motorbike on the road I had to complete my CBT (Compulsory Basic Training), this I took on the 21st of November. I had to spend the morning doing slow, control exercises in a school playground followed by a couple of hours out on the road with an instructor in the afternoon.

New Suit

The last time I rode a motorbike of any kind was back in 1987 when I had a 50cc moped to take me to college. At the time I had a full Belstaff waterproof suit, FM crash helmet, Frank Thomas boots and gloves. The helmet always had a problem with the visor misting up, it still fits me but I needed a new one. The new HJC helmet has a facemask that should help with the misting problem.

Two Wheels Are Better Than 4

In the last month road works have started which hinder two of my main routes to and from work. This has instantly added half an hour to my journey and both are set to run well into next year. Several times this week I have spent more time stationary in traffic than I have moving. When it takes two hours to do a twenty-mile journey it's time to look at your options.

Guy Fawkes Night 2001

My brother has done a lot of work in his garden this year and was left with a lot of old fence panels, the remains of a shed and the remains of a tree. We made up a fire and kept it burning for much of the evening.

Michael bought a box of fireworks for five pounds and they were worth every penny, not a penny more. The most fun was had from when we realised that the squealing noise coming from the fire was the sound of the snails, which had made their homes on the damp wood, evaporating.

Pumpkins 2001

This year Babs decided to join us in carving some pumpkins. She bought a smaller pumpkin than the rest of us but this worked out better when the candle was placed inside. Babs also added some eyebrows to her pumpkin by just removing the skin from the shapes above the eyes. I'm not sure who she was thinking of when we took this picture....

Breaking Down

Last month one of the front wheels on the car started to squeak. While in the store buying replacement disc pads I also bought a new battery for my alarm remote since in recent weeks I'd had to get closer and closer to the car before the button would work. After changing the battery in the remote it stopped working completely.

Nothing To See Here

Would anyone like to buy a 19 inch paperweight?

I've not been having much luck with my computer recently. A couple of months back Outlook stopped working and I thought I'd lost all my mail.

Searching through news groups I eventually found the cure was to rebuild the icon bar.

Memories

Recently I've been surfing the Internet by following links that people leave as they sign guest books on web sites. Each time I sign a guest book it tends to prompt the owner to come sign mine. Mark from THEBECKET.CO.UK read an earlier post on my guest book and had the following to say:

Like the Site - what happened with those ants in assembly then? we all want to know the story !!

Music On Demand

Ever since I first sat by the radio with my father's reel to reel tape recorder and a microphone to record 'Top of the pops' I have always loved to have music around me. I used to frequently buy vinyl singles and albums. I was never a great fan of tapes, it didn't take very long for them to stretch and distort no matter how well you looked after them.

A Trilogy In Five Parts

The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy

My journey to and from work each day involves a trip across the river Thames on a ferry. Sometimes this journey takes no more than five minutes but often I'm waiting for anything up to an hour. This time I have set aside for reading. Though I have tried reading books on Sendmail and Lotus Notes I find it very difficult to read technical books without having a machine by my side to practice what I'm learning. The time is therefore used to escape into fictional literature.

Back To School

The idea of this project is to re-create the original Hook Lane School that stood at the bottom of Hook Lane in Welling. The school was built in 1906 and closed down and demolished in 1988. Initially I will only work on the junior school building. Depending on the findings during the research for this project I may then go on to the infant's school also.
