Memories

Recently I've been surfing the Internet by following links that people leave as they sign guest books on web sites. Each time I sign a guest book it tends to prompt the owner to come sign mine. Mark from THEBECKET.CO.UK read an earlier post on my guest book and had the following to say:

Like the Site - what happened with those ants in assembly then? we all want to know the story !!

Music On Demand

Ever since I first sat by the radio with my father's reel to reel tape recorder and a microphone to record 'Top of the pops' I have always loved to have music around me. I used to frequently buy vinyl singles and albums. I was never a great fan of tapes, it didn't take very long for them to stretch and distort no matter how well you looked after them.

A Trilogy In Five Parts

The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy

My journey to and from work each day involves a trip across the river Thames on a ferry. Sometimes this journey takes no more than five minutes but often I'm waiting for anything up to an hour. This time I have set aside for reading. Though I have tried reading books on Sendmail and Lotus Notes I find it very difficult to read technical books without having a machine by my side to practice what I'm learning. The time is therefore used to escape into fictional literature.

Back To School

The idea of this project is to re-create the original Hook Lane School that stood at the bottom of Hook Lane in Welling. The school was built in 1906 and closed down and demolished in 1988. Initially I will only work on the junior school building. Depending on the findings during the research for this project I may then go on to the infant's school also.

Summer Holiday 2001

This was the first true holiday that we had spent as a family. We stayed at a full board hotel in Palmanova in Majorca. Though the only flights the kids had been on before were when they came over to England they were both well behaved on the plane.

Thorpe Park

We had to wait quite a while as the kids queued to go on the water slide. Though the sky was pretty cloudy it didn't rain. Normally this would mean that we'd have stayed dry but after riding 'The Tidal Wave' we were all soaked.

Wild Visitor

My parents live close to a high street. In town the foxes aren't seen as too much of a pest since they help keep down the rodent population and clear up the Big Macs and Tower Burgers which people dump out of their cars when they've had enough.

A Brave Boy

On Sunday while Seth and Cara were playing in the living room Seth slipped and twisted his hand. According to Seth his little finger on his right hand was bent right back to touch the back of his hand. I had him sit with his hand in cold water for a little while and made sure he could still move his finger and had feelings in the tips of his fingers. With a big bowl of ice-cream we left it as that.
On Tuesday Seth's school calls us to say that Seth has gone to the nurse because his hand hurt. After waiting in the accident center in my local hospital for just over an hour, x-rays show that he has broken one of the bones in the side of his hand. That night they put a temparary plaster to support the hand.
Wednesday morning we have an appointment with the fracture clinic. Here, the doctor decides that the best thing to do is to tape the two fingers together and use a bandage for support.
Throughout the whole three days Seth has not cried at all and we've not heard so much as an "ouch" from him.
He's a tough little kid.

The New Fence

We had ordered the fence panels last week and set aside this weekend to put them up. It logically follows that during the morning while doing the easy work of removing the old fence the sun shone beautifully. By the time we started putting the new fences up the skys had turned black.
Though I didn't mind working in the rain even I came inside when I hear claps of thunder, I didn't like the idea of standing atop a metal ladder, hammering in fence posts, during a thunderstorm.

The other problem with braving the elements to put the fence up is that my helpers (Barbara and Seth) didn't want to get wet and kept dissapearing inside when it rained. Hopefully, if the weather is better tomorrow, I'll straighten the panels up a little.

Added 2022
Looking at Google Maps for the old house now, from the discoloration it looks like the original fence I put up in 2001 is still standing, it also looks like the tree in my original picture was not kept pruned back and has somewhat taken over the top end of the garden. There must be no light coming in to the back of the house?

Toothy Grin

Most pictures of Seth recently have him with his lips firmly shut. Christmas 1998 Cara was swinging her toy vacuum by it's chord and broke Seth's front tooth. Though the tooth was crowned it wasn't long before he chipped it again and again and again.

Today I took Seth down to the dentist and had the tooth re-capped again. Lets see how long this one lasts. He doesn't eat a lot of sweets so it is more likely to be a football which takes out this tooth.

Mothers Day

I took Cara and Seth shopping yesterday for presents for Mothers Day and Barbara's birthday. With two weeks until her birthday I'm taking a risk that the kids (especially Cara) will stay quiet.
For Mothers Day the kids bought Barbara chocolates.

We went out for a meal on Mothers Day and the resteraunt had a couple of staff entertaining children. Cara had her face painted and then made a card for her mum.

Seth hasn't been feeling too well recently, he won't come out during the day, he hasn't looked at himself in a mirror and has developed an allergy to garlic bread and steak.

Little Shop Of Horrors

For Christmas my parents bought Barbara an Amaryllis plant. We've put it in the kitchen window and it gets watered every other day. Barbara claims that she doesn't talk to it but I'm sure she does.
As a new project I have set up the digital camera to take a picture every hour of the plant. So far, over the past two days I have taken 73 pictures. Tonight I downloaded the pictures on to the computer and made up a short movie of the combination of the pictures. Although only short the movie shows the Amaryllis growing an the Basil in the pot beside it. I'm going to keep taking pictures, uploading them every couple of days until the plant flowers.
To see a low quality Real Video version of the animation so far follow this link.
Added in 2022
Since Real Video isn't used any more I've converted the short, low quality video to mp4 format and it can be downloaded here or you can watch it bellow

3D Me Now

Pic of the day 23rd Jan 2001

Two good reasons for this update:

My brother sent me a link to a program which allows you to create a 3d version of yourself and after a couple of evenings work I've got models of both Barbara and myself.
Barbara has a neat new hair style which her model shows of really well.

Barbara was tired of her hair colour and had low lights put in just before Christmas. This week she decided she wanted to go back to blonde. The first attempt to die her hair made it blonde at the roots and red at the ends, The second attempt made her hair a gold colour with orange at the ends. Barbara cried and cried and cried. Knowing that at this stage most people would pay anything to get this fixed the salons wanted a huge amount of money to fix her hair. Luckily a friend of Barbara's was able to style her hair short enough to get rid of most of the red. I personally think that her new hair style looks very good and in a twisted way I'm glad she messed up her hair in the first place otherwise she probably would not have had it styled this way.
The programme that's been used to make the two 3d models is called 3dMeNow. You can download a player and trial version of the program from www.3dmenow.com (OLD URL) .
Once you've downloaded the viewer you can download my head from
www.dwall.dircon.co.uk/3dmenow/daz2001.bio(OLD URL)
and Barbara's from
www.dwall.dircon.co.uk/3dmenow/babs2001.bio.(OLD URL)
If you use the program to make your own 3d head please send it to me :o)
PS added 2022: A little searching suggests that the technology for 3DMe Now was acquired by www.worldviz.com. The bio files are still available daz2001.bio and babs2001.bio.
I've now found that the WayBack Machine has files related to 3dMe Now. I'm going to see if I can still get the player working.
I do also need to do some more work on the modern version of my own 3D sculpture which I started in Blender for use in VR.

Pic Of The Day Jan 21st 2001

It's been a slow week for pictures so once again we dive in to the archives for this picture.
This is of Seth and I at sports day last year. The "dads race" was an obsticle course where we had to dress in various items of clothing along the route. Being the only dad that put each of the items of clothing on properly rather than just slinging it around my neck, I came last.
The original idea for this web site was to make up and interactive way of storing family photographs and pictures.

Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow

Pic of the Day 14th January 2001

Barbara has been cutting my hair for the last few months. It saves money in a couple of ways, don't have to pay the hair dresser any more and don't have to rent a movie to keep Barbara entertained.
I'm not sure what happened today other than that Barbara was going through the head fittings for the clippers and found the number one head. "Where are you going to use the number one?" I asked. In reply she ran the clippers along the side of my head then stopped.
"Oops."
I now have a very short hair cut that should mean I don't need another for at least a month.
