Highway Code Rule 1

Pavements and footways (including any path along the side of the road) should be used if provided. When possible, avoid being next to the kerb with your back to the traffic. If you hace to step into the road, look both ways first. Always remain aware of your environment and avoid unnecessary distractions. Always show due car and consideration for others.

Darren's notes: The first rule in the book and quite simple. Applies mainly to pedestrians. Interesting suggestion to avoid "unnecessary distractions" in these days of mobile phones, headphones and ear-buds.
