Bit Damp Back Home Aparently
The flat roof over what was once our garage has an appalling drain system and was overcome by the flash rain storm. Though it didn't rain for long the small drain couldn't cope and the water ended up overflowing into the area just under the roof and then leaking through light fittings.
This has happened before but generally when the drain has become blocked rather than through pure volume of water.
There's a few things that need to be done but with each job I'd need to look at the consequences.
Currently if the rain floods as it has the water sits on the roof and eventually leaks in two places, one is where an air vent is not properly sealed and the other is where the water drain is not sufficiently sealed to the drain pipe.
If I seal the air vent then more water will leak around the drain pipe.
If I seal the air vent and the drain pipe without increasing the flow through the drain pipe then the water will continue to rise finding the next overflow point which I believe will be the window ledge, pouring water into the wall cavity.
The optimal fix would require a smaller window on the stairs and an entire new roof to match the height of the roof over the kitchen.
The next best fix would be to bring down the box-work in the bathroom and put a bigger drain pipe in, properly fixing it so there's no leak around the drain.
Seeing the rivers that flowed down local roads, cars stranded, shops and houses with floors actually under water I think we got of lightly.
Meanwhile here in France it's another scortcher.
